How to Set Up a Tent in Any Weather

Setting up a tent in bad weather is a skill. Practice in good weather first.

Find flat ground. Clear rocks and sticks. In wind, shelter behind a rock or trees.

Stake the corners before raising. In wind, stake downwind first. The tent cannot blow away if corners are secure.

Attach the poles. Most modern tents are color coded. Raise the tent quickly.

Put on the rain fly last. It keeps you dry and adds wind resistance.

In rain, set up under cover if possible. Put a tarp over the tent area first.

Practice at home. Set it up and take it down three times. Then the first trip in the rain will not be a disaster.
